I love to photograph newborns. It is my absolute favorite thing, and it is a pretty sweet job with awesome perks (baby snuggles). However, until now, newborn photography is not regulated. Anyone can pick up a camera and call themselves a newborn photographer. And I know that everyone starts somewhere, but with little experience with photographing babies some photographers are not knowledgeable in safe newborn handling and posing. There is a new organization called Accredited Professional Newborn Photographers International (APNPI) run by some of the top in the industry including Stephanie Robin, a long time safety ambassador for newborn posing. This organization creates an area for new photographers to learn and for new parents to find a safe photographer for their sweet baby.
In order to receive the first certification of Qualified Newborn Photographer (QNP) you need to submit multiple images and lots of paperwork about your experience, business practices including insurance and liability, and prove your competency in the area of lighting (studio and/or natural), camera functions, composition, safe posing and training as well as your experience working with a variety of situations and families.
I am proud to announce that I have received this certification (QNP) as one of the first few to do so! Attached is the official press release. I am excited to continue working towards further accreditations in newborn and maternity and to continue learning.
